Hey ho,

had some new ideas in the last days. I was thinking about terraforming, evolution and planet-conquering and developed some critters who could be very useful for the transformation progress of the planets. The concept is based on one special "animal" formed by a superior race to discover or conquer new habitats and planets. This critter is able to sense the conditions of a habitat/planet and then it transforms into the most useful form for the next step of terraforming.

In the middle you can see the "worm". Its the basic species and can transform into all other forms around it. It was inspired by the anime "Parasyte" :-)

Left top corner - if the worm lands in the atmosphere of a gas giant or on a superearth with thick atmosphere layers it transform into a floater, which is able to filter the air to collect flying organic materials or other chemical. The floater is comparable to a sponge-like fruit, ready to get picked by the real conquerers

Left bottom corner - if the worm lands on an earth-like planet with water but a vast landscape without vegetation it builds up the vegetation by transforming into something like a tree, this "tree" produces oxygen and is the base for a possible new ecosystem (BTW there are thousands and thousands of worms and they all work as one big organism)

bottom - if the worm lands on a dry sand or stone planet without surface liquids it turns into a digging creature, it uses acid to dig deeply into the planet surface and searches for ground water or cavesystems

Right top corner - now, this one is special! if the worm lands on a planet with advanced ecosystems or even civilisation it turns into something like a balloon sonde. It collects all informations of the ecosystem/civilisation and sends all the information to the conquerers

Right bottom corner - if the worm lands on a water planet and the ocean is rich of organic stuff it turns into a predator! It consumes as much at it can and will then be the prey for the conquerers

So, hope you like. Would like to hear your opinions.
Keep on watching and please comment!

With "fleshy" you mean "a planet full of life"?

Meat moss, nice... well, hard to say. Think it would collect informations for the conquering race, cause a complete overgrown planet (when this is based on a viral infection or whatever) seems to be a nasty and not really comfortable planet to build up a civilization...

I've always loved the concept of development plasticity.  I'm curious-- could the "plant" form of the organism develop into several different forms depending on what environment it lands on? Say, maybe it starts as the form in the bottom left, but if it lands in a desert it develops a cactus-like form, whereas if it lands in a wetter, hotter area it becomes a tropical plant? Or if it lands in a cold region, it can develop into a ground-hugging lichen or a cold-resistant conifer? Would it be possible for the plant-form to actually develop into different "species" in the same environment, so you could have an entire forest ecology formed from one worm-organism colony?

Yeah evolution of the pioneer species is possible and desired, whole ecosytems could be build up by this. The plasticity allows nearly everything 😃 btw the species shown are just examples, the worms have a lot possibilities to adapt

I had a similar idea about a biological hive mind, similar to Eywa in Avatar. It kinda inherited an earth like planet after everything else pretty much died, courtesy of a centuries long war between... *Deep breath* A fascist nation descended from the dimensionly displaced government of Airstrip One, a brutal technocracy that literally worships efficiency, a demonic cult whose dark god is a dimensional parasite feeding off genocide, a hive mind controlling an army of mutants descended from humans, an AI occupying a cloud of satellites in orbit following mysterious orders to protect something... growing under the polar icecap, another AI that just wants to destroy everything, everywhere, by any means necessary, seventeen alien invasions with agendas running from assimilation to colonization to conquest to survival to simple escape from this planet of endless war, giant sea monsters sparing with swarms of fish human abominations, who are trying to create enough pointed psychic energy to tear a whole in reality and bring in the Apocalypse.

Needless to say, there was not much left to go on.
