Radiation of Pentapods by MickMcDee Radiation of Pentapods by MickMcDee
Hi guys,

in the last time I was searching for new ideas, but found just nothing . . . so I was bored and trained with an old friend of mine: a ball pen! And just after a few hours I finished this wonderful collection of alien species developed from a single pioneer.
All of them have five legs, so I called them "Pentapods". They developed on the planet Nep Abal, which has even better conditions than the earth (tropical climate and fortunate positions of continents cause forests and wide grass lands world wide)
I wanted to give the Pentapods latin names, but didn't had the time for the research, so they now have german names with english translation:

a. Kleiner Schluerfer (little slurper) - the pioneer species, it feeds on eggs of invertebrates and simple moss-like plants

Class 1. Pfeilnasen (arrow noses) - all carnivores, they hunt by shooting their arrow like and poisonous tounges onto the prey
b. Gemeine Pfeilnase (general arrow nose) - smaller predator, hunts specially the little slurper or searches for carrion
c. Titanenlanze (lance of the titans) - an elegant and fast hunter, which lives in the wide steppe; as big as a tiger
d. Hoehlenstachel (cave spine) - a blind dweller, waiting in the dark of deep caves; hunts specially big invertebrates

Class 2. Saeulenbeine (pillar legs) - all herbivores, they fill the ecological niches of elefants or sauropods, so their behavior is almost the same
e. Baumkronengreifer (treetop grabber) - as big as an tapir, it likes young leaves, but although juicy fruits
f. Huenenhafter Gierschlund (gigantic greed gorge) - biggest animal of Nep Abal, as big as an Indricotherium (my personal favourite extinct mammal), it nearly feeds on all plants it founds on its way

Class 3. Knackkiefer (crack jaws) - although all herbivores, they specialized on harder (nut-like) fruits and grain
g. Kornsammler (corn collector) - collects corn and other seeds in its trunk and feeds its offspring (or itself) later
h. Ziegelruecken (brick back) - although feeds on different kinds of corn, the back bricks are for defence and deterrence (similar to Stegosaurus)
i. Schreckkiefer (scare jaw) - the jaw looks scary, but its for cracking corn which is even as hard as stone, sometimes it uses the jaw for defence

Class 4. Schlingarme (loop arms) - two of their five legs are completely free moveable , thats a big advantage (we know that from our own way of evolution!)
j. Waldgeist (Forest ghost) - a small and shy omnivore that hides in the thicket, but which is already able to use simple tools for hunting little critters
k. Grosser Angeber (Big bragger) - completely harmless, just makes a terrible noise if it sees enemies and prances its body to tell without words: "Look at me! I'm bigger than you!" (that was obviously the name-giving attribute)
l. Abalianer (Abalian) - the sapient species of Nep Abal, they've already reached the industrial time and plan to discover the galaxy; they're smaller (average 1,2 meters) and a little weaker than us, but more loose and more persistent
m. Blutroter Schlaechter (Crimson slaughterer) - the most bestial predator of Nep Abal, it hunts almost every creature you can see on this collection (even the arrow noses, but except f. and n.), sometimes it even devours its own offspring or its partner
n. Schlangenarmiger Tyrann (snake-arm tyrant) - the biggest predator of Nep Abal, nearly 4 meters tall, it even hunts the gigantic greed gorges; its arms look like snakes but with claws instead of teeth - there's no escape from them! Muahahahaha!

So, said enough! Hope you like my Pentapods! Please comment and tell me which one you like the most! :-)

P.S.: my favourite is f. the gigantic greed gorge!

I love the way of you representing the evolution of the creature. It looks simple and concrete at once... And it's fun!

These are AMAZING.

I think what's really doing it for me is how all of these are on a chart depicting divergent evolutions from. BRAINGASM!

In any case, simply amazing.

Okay, you've inspired me. I'm making my own planet now!

Perhaps you would like this website called Hypotheticus Zoo? [link] It's basicly a bunch of hypothetical planets that you evolve creatures on, as long as they have scientific plausibility.

well, I must admit I'm a fan of perfect scientific plausibility, I draw my creatures just for fun (ok, mostly I adhere the rules, only sometimes i'm a rebel)
but, nevermind, it's nice to know, that I've inspired you!^^ think thats the greatest compliment an artist can get! Now I have to visit the website . . .

Ha, we all need a break from realistic creatures now and then, don't we?
Yeah, I already have a bunch of creatures in my sketchbook...the planned sentient species has a "moustache" for hands (it had crab-like claws that gradually evolved more and more into hands, but didn't move from their mouth area).
Yay somebody who finally bothered to maybe visit the website because there's only four active members including me and that is sad.

Hmmm......arrow noses. Maybe a predecessor of the 'Arrowtounge' from alien planet?

haha, I knew at least one person would recognize it - of course, the arrow noses were inspired by the Arrowtounge, but they're not their predecessors!
I just wanted to show you an example of convergent evolution! Think, my try was succesful^^

Yes it was. I really like the series Alien planet as well as the future is wild, and I have a journal entry with all the episodes of 'The future is wild' that you should check out.

One thing I found quite unimaginable about aline planet though was the sheer size of everything. I mean, I imaged the arrowtounge to be the size of a great dane or something but then they said it was as big as a T-Rex and I was like :iconwtfboomplz:

thats because Darwin 4 has a lower gravity than earth, so everything can easily become bigger!
I know the Future is wild-series, its awesome! (Have you ever read "After man" from Dougal Dixon?) unfortunately such series are extremely rare . . .

Yeah, more people should watch those epic serieses (plural of series???)

Also I myself am inspired to design creatures from everyday objects. For example I have a spray-fan like this:

and I have designed an insect which is quite large (the size of an everyday fridge) called the Orbonare (again latin words) meaning:

orbis: circle
nare: fly

direct meaning: circle flyer (hence the 'fan' component on the object)

The tube which pumps the water to the fan is a proboscis in which the orbonare sucks up nectar. It then excretes it into its wings (all three of them) which buzz in a circle at the back of its body. The proboscis (unlike butterflies on earth) can not only curl up but retreat fully into the orbonare.

I will probably release a deviation of it or you can give it a shot as well for fun!

This is beautiful - you've summarised an entire phylum in just fourteen species, and created complex predator/ prey relationships in the process. Each animal is, in itself, a work of art.
